Sizergh Castle

House

Still lived in by the Strickland family who have occupied the castle for more than 750 years, Sizergh has many tales to tell and certainly feels lived in, with centuries-old portraits and fine furniture sitting alongside modern family photographs. As with many manors of this nature and size, the building has been extended and added to. The earliest part of the building is the tower which dates back to the fourteenth or fifteenth century. An extension was added in the Tudor times. Inside the castle is a true array of styles, the base of the medieval solar tower, through the Elizabethan interiors, into the French regency-styled Drawing Room and beyond. The Elizabethan interiors are reflected in the elaborately carved oak panelling, display the family’s wealth of the Tudor period.
There were quite a number of stairs within the property so it may be worthwhile contacting the property directly to see if appropriate for an individual who is less mobile.Gardens / Grounds
The gardens and grounds here are beautiful and definitely a key feature of the property. These include a pond, lake, a collection of ferns, allotment and a rock garden.

We visited in September so the autumnal colours are dramatic and strikingly beautiful, we didn't personally do a ramble around the grounds but did walk around the property and spend some time soaking in the garden.
Various guided walks around the property are available, i'd advise checking the website to avoid any disappointment.
The garden did have loose gravel paths, steep slopes, terraces and a lot of uneven surfaces, so i'd be mindful of this if you have young children or need assistance with walking.
